The German Language Course
Intensive German language courses with a total of 90 hours

Language levels
- basic, intermediate and advanced level. Please note that we do not offer beginner courses. Basic knowledge of German is requisite. Levels A1 - C2 in the table below refer to the Common European Framework of Reference of Languages – CeF.

he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person
talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. |

A2 |
Can
understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas
of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family
information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in
simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of
information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple
terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters
in areas of immediate need. |

Independent Intermediate level: |
B1 |
Can
understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters
regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most
situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the
language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which
are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and
events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and
explanations for opinions and plans. |

B2 |
Can
understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract
topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of
specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity
that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible
without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a
wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue
giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. |

Proficient Advanced level:

C1 |
Can
understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise
implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously
without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language
flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional
purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex
subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors
and cohesive devices. |

C2 |
Can
understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise
information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing
arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express
him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating
finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations. |

Faculty
All teachers are native speakers and university graduates with great experience in teaching German to foreigners.
Lessons
- Analogous to the extent of their German skills all participants will be assigned to groups in the German language courses. Assignment of participants to skill levels is effected on the basis of a placement test given on the first day after arrival. Subject to the number of participants one or more groups will created per level in accordance with the evaluation of the placement test.
- Language classes are held in the morning (9 h – 12.30 h).
- Participants in the basic level will be offered two lessons per week in the afternoon (13.15 h – 14.45 h) on top of that
In addition to the daily language instruction, participants can take part in a variety of seminars and workshops held in the afternoon:

The seminars and lectures
Seminars and lectures are held in the afternoon. They serve to provide important information and knowledge about the respective support programme topic. Competent persons from the areas of politics, business and science will lecture on economic, sociological as well as cultural and educational policy problems. (4-6 hours per week)
They are primarily intended for participants with intermediate or good German skills.

Additional tuition
For the improvement of the language competences special courses in the following fields are offered (2 - 4 hours per week)*:
- Grammar
- Conversation
- Phonetics
- Methodical work
(*At least 10 participants per group)
At the end of the course all participants receive a certificate of attendance.
After a successful course participation the Hochschule Bremen awards 4 credit points (ECTS - European Credit Transfer System) for each course.
The participants of the German language course can on request take a written examination at the end of the course.
Summer school participants
Students, university graduates, persons holding a higher education entry qualification. Basic knowledge of German is required.
