  • How to promote Sustainable Development by offering better trading conditions?
  • How to raise consumers’ awareness for social and ecological issues in international trade?
Contents

This course is for anyone who would like to learn more about fair trade, including

  • the role of developing countries in world trade, fairness in trade relations, and the consequences of the present world trade order for producers in developing countries;
  • the principles of the fair trade movement, standards, and certification processes;
  • empirical social research and market research methods to analyze the impact of fair trade projects on development and to assess the potential of fair trade products in international consumer markets;
  • a case-studies based examination of how fair trade can alleviate poverty for artisans and farmers in developing countries;
  • different approaches to raise consumers’ consciousness about social and ecological issues in international trade;
  • how to find new customers for fair trade products and successfully manage fair trade businesses;
  • project management and marketing techniques applicable for fair trade businesses.

In addition: two-day excursion to Bonn – visit to the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Discussion with representatives on current topics of Germany’s development cooperation.

Faculty The faculty includes Professors of International Economics, Development Economics, Political Sciences, and Business Administration as well as several representatives of Fair Trade organizations and businesses.

Course schedule

This course is an intensive course. Classes take place all-day, Monday to Friday. Some field trips are on Saturday. The excursion to Bonn is organised from Thursday to Saturday.

Course participants

Students of all subjects; undergraduate and graduate students with a special interest in Fair Trade. Activists in Fair Trade organizations and NGO-projects.
Minimum age of participation 18 years.

Tram and bus ticket

As a participant of this programme you will get a monthly pass.
With this pass you can travel on all trams and busses within the city of Bremen.

Leisure Activities

An attractive activities and leisure programme provides students with ample opportunities to discover Bremen and the North of Germany as well as the former capital Bonn and become aquainted with the country and its people.

Board and lodging

Participants live in basic student single or double rooms in dormitories or hostels, shared flats or apartments.
The accommodation costs are included in the course fee.
Board: Self catering – meals are served in the refectory and cafeteria from Monday to Friday. The lunch costs approx. 3 to 5 euros. Furthermore Bremen offers a variety of well priced national and international restaurants, snack-bars and takeaway-bars.

Insurance

For the duration of your stay in Germany we recommend taking out a health and accident insurance policy as well as a third party insurance. The Hochschule Bremen will not be liable for any costs arising in the case of either sickness or injury.
Summer school fees do not include any insurance coverage.

Additional Information

Internet access and e-mail are available to every participant.
During the entire stay tutors of the Hochschule Bremen take care of participants’ needs. At the end of the course a certificate will be issued to each participant.
