Objectives
  • How to promote Sustainable Development by offering better trading conditions?
  • How to raise consumers’ awareness for social and ecological issues in international trade?
Contents

This course is for anyone who would like to learn more about fair trade, including

  • the role of developing countries in world trade, fairness in trade relations, and the consequences of the present
  • world trade order for producers in developing countries;
  • the principles of the fair trade movement, standards, and certification processes;
  • empirical social research to analyze the impact of fair trade projects on sustainable development;
  • a case-studies based examination of how fair trade can alleviate poverty for artisans and farmers in developing countries and to contribute to sustainable development;
  • different approaches to raise consumers’ consciousness about social and ecological issues in international trade;
  • market research methods to assess the potential of fair trade products in international consumer markets;
    project management and marketing techniques applicable for fair trade businesses.
In addition: 2-day excursion to Berlin - visit to the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Discussion with representatives on current topics of Germany’s development cooperation.

Certificate / transcript of records

At the end of the course a certificate of attendance and transcript of records will be issued to each participant. Successful participants can earn 10 credit points - ECTS / 4 credit hours - US.

Students and interested persons, professionals in the field of Fair Trade and/or NGO projects or organizations.

Tram and bus ticket

As a participant in the International Summer School on arrival you will receive a ticket for public transport (tram + bus) for the duration of the course. With this ticket you can use all trams and buses within the city of Bremen. For travels on the night trams/buses on the weekend a surcharge of EURO 1 per ride is due.

Additional Information

  • Internet access and e-mail are available to every participant.
  • During the entire stay tutors of the Hochschule Bremen will be available and will take care of participants’ needs.
