Culture, Communication and Safety:
Communication in the Multicultural Maritime Working Environment

Lectures, excursion and assessments 40 hours

Objectives

The participants should deal with the peculiarities of communication in the multi-cultural / multi-ethnic / multi-lingual maritime work routine on board and ashore, develop their own solution and action competences and be able to pass this on as well.

Topics are:

  1. Safety and the human factor
  2. Language and culture
  3. Overview intercultural research and training
  4. Introduction to CEFR / CEF Merchant Navy Officer Profile
  5. The new CEFR-Companion Volume
  6. Culture, communication, safety in Maritime Communication

Course participants

The program is open to lecturers of Maritime English, students of Maritime Studies or related Maritime Educational Training Institutions, employees of the Maritime Industry (ashore or afloat).

Certificate / transcript of records

At the end of the course a certificate of attendance and transcript of records will be issued to each participant. Successful participants can earn 6 ECTS credit points.

Accommodation

Accommodation expenses in Bremen are not included in the course fee.

For accommodation in Bremen we recommend our partner hotel or partner hostel. Rooms can be booked directly at the hotel/hostel with the indication "Maritime Summer Academy 2018“ until the 15th of June 2018 the latest:

  • The course starts on Monday, 6 August 2018, 9.30 h.
  • The course ends on Friday, 10 August 2018, 17.00 h.
  • Please book your accommodation in Bremen accordingly.

Tram and bus ticket

As a participant in the Maritime Summer Academy on arrival you will receive a ticket for public transport (tram + bus) for the duration of the course. With this ticket you can use all trams and buses within the city of Bremen. For travels on the night trams/buses on the weekend a surcharge of EURO 1 per ride is due.

Additional Information

  • Internet access (wifi) within the university (HSB) is available to every participant.
  • During the entire stay tutors of the Hochschule Bremen will be available and will take care of participants' needs.

Insurance

For the duration of your stay in Germany we recommend taking out a health and accident insurance policy as well as a third party insurance. The Hochschule Bremen will not be liable for any costs arising in the case of either sickness or injury.
Maritime Summer Academy fees do not include any insurance coverage.

Registration

Registration is made online by:

  • Complete and submit the online registration including photo.
  • Transfer of the respective course fee in EURO within 10 days after registration.
  • All bank charges / costs of the transfer must be covered by you!

Upon receipt of the complete registration documents and fees, participants will receive a confirmation by Email - pdf form. With this confirmation you can apply for your visa if required.
